An app or recording guides you through a pre-recorded exercise. A hypnotherapist follows where the client leads and draws on their knowledge, procedures, and techniques. What does that require of the person providing the guidance?

For us, a significant part of the answer lies in what happens during hypnosis. The client responds, experiences something, and sets the process in motion. The therapist follows where the client leads and responds accordingly, drawing on their procedures and techniques. This requires a human mind that observes, understands, and can adapt.

Suppose you’re seeking counseling because you keep experiencing the same kind of stress. You want to make a change. Before beginning, the hypnotherapist will carefully ask you what you hope to achieve. How would you feel if you were more at peace? How would you know that something has changed? This gives the hypnosis sessions a specific goal.

That’s where human interaction comes into play in our approach. You’re working with someone who has a goal, reacts in their own way, and brings experiences that may surface during hypnosis. You know your procedures. At the same time, the course of the process constantly requires your attention and appropriate decisions.

Know the goal, follow the client

Wanting more peace of mind. It sounds like a clear goal. When working with hypnosis, we want to make that more specific. How do you feel when you have that peace of mind? How do you know you’re experiencing more peace of mind? How can others tell that you’re feeling that way?

By asking these questions, the hypnotherapist helps the client identify the desired change. For example, a client might describe what that sense of calm in the body feels like or how their daily actions would be different. The client puts this into words themselves. This clarifies what the therapy is focused on and how the client would recognize a change.

With that goal in mind, we’ll begin working with hypnosis. The process will then take its own course. What the client experiences and how they respond provides the therapist with information for the next step. This requires paying attention to whatever arises in the moment.

A procedure provides direction for your actions. Your techniques give you options for how to respond. To apply them effectively, you need to be able to follow what’s happening. What kind of response do you get? What does that response require of you? How do you use your approach to build on what the client is offering you?

This is where the human mind’s ability to adapt comes into play. You draw on your knowledge and experience while keeping your focus on the client. You recognize something, weigh it, and decide how to proceed. An unexpected reaction may call for a different step in your procedure or the use of an appropriate technique. That is the expertise you develop as a hypnotherapist.

This requires an active therapist. The client leads you in a certain direction; you need to know how to work with that within the framework of your procedures. You remain engaged in the process, recognize when you need to adjust your approach, and keep the goal in mind. Your knowledge of your approach and your ability to respond to this person come together in this process.

A recording follows a predetermined script. In individually guided hypnotherapy, the therapist can respond to what the client is experiencing in the moment. How new digital systems function in this context and what they can contribute requires a separate assessment. We can, however, describe our own contribution in concrete terms: monitoring the client, understanding their reactions, and continuing to work based on our techniques and procedures.

For us, that is precisely where human contact takes on meaning. You work with a person who experiences things in their own way, and as a therapist, you bring your own observations, knowledge, and judgment to the table. That requires a thorough mastery of the profession as well as the flexibility to apply that knowledge in the moment.

Clients choose a person

In a Dutch study of people with irritable bowel syndrome, about three-quarters initially preferred hypnotherapy with a therapist. The other options were self-guided hypnotherapy via an app and online psychoeducation. This says something about this study group; however, it does not explain the reasons for that preference. Furthermore, the app was not an AI therapist. [1]

Broader research also provides grounds for taking human contact seriously. According to a meta-analysis by Elliott and colleagues, empathy is associated with more favorable outcomes in psychotherapy. This study describes a different treatment framework and does not provide evidence for our hypnosis procedures. [2]

For us, that human element takes shape while working under hypnosis. You follow what the client is experiencing and adapt your approach based on your procedures and techniques. It is precisely in this application that knowledge, observation, and judgment come together.

What does this require of our profession?

Digital tools can be incorporated into counseling, for example, to learn and practice self-hypnosis. In a small German study on attitudes toward AI, patients and therapists highlighted both its potential as a support tool and the importance of human contact. AI had been described in advance as a tool. [3]

For us, the hypnotherapist’s expertise remains central. Do you have a firm grasp of your procedures? Can you recognize when you need to adapt your approach? Can you stay attuned to the client and apply an appropriate technique? That ability requires training, practice, and an awareness of the limits of your expertise.

At HypnoseMentor, we want therapists to continue developing in this area. Human connection takes on meaning in what you perceive during hypnosis and what you do with that information.

Would you like to learn more?
